(PORTAGE) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch and Cass counties Tuesday night after at least two confirmed tornadoes and softball-size hail hit the area, leaving significant damage to buildings and roads.

The Michigan Supreme Court declined to hear a technical question regarding an appeal filed by Paul Bellar, one of the men convicted in connection with the plot to kidnap and kill Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Bellar's appeal will continue, however.
