A Calhoun County House candidate filed a lawsuit Wednesday asking a court to stop the Board of County Canvassers' re-tabulation of Battle Creek’s absentee ballots in the 44th District House race. The judge, however, ordered the re-tabulation to continue.

The clerk of tiny Rock River Township in Alger County was stripped of his ability to conduct the election next week after he and his deputy clerk announced their plans to hand-count ballots.

Local clerks began offering absentee ballots Thursday as Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and local election officials held separate news events to assure the public that voting in Michigan is as secure as ever.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson told National Press Foundation fellows in Detroit on Monday that the Department of State plans to roll out a "panic button" communication system for 2024 election workers, contingent on the support of local clerks to help implement it at their voting locations.

"Mobile voting," or voting online via a smartphone app or website, has been piloted in multiple states for military and overseas voters, but one jurisdiction in Washington state that's extended it to all eligible voters has tripled voter participation.
