All departments will no longer need to report to legislators on the severance packages given to outgoing state employees, particularly high-ranking department officials and directors, under the recently signed Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer makes $159,300 per year and 262 state employees make more, along with 16 of the 19 department heads. Many department directors make even more than their boss, according to records obtained by MIRS through the Freedom of Information Act.

Most state government workers are still working a combined in-person/remote work schedule post-COVID-19, according to work-from-home rules obtained by MIRS.
