(Source: MIRS.news, Published 02/24/2026) A prosecutor confirmed on Tuesday that the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) officer who was arraigned Monday had a cache of weapons and state property, including tear gas cannisters.

Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler said 196 firearms were seized from Casey Wagner’s home on Friday.

“The matter is still being investigated to determine if more charges will arise,” he said.

Butler said he didn’t have “absolute specifics about those firearms,” but the Detroit Free Press quoted him as saying county sheriff’s deputies seized sawed-off shotguns and semi-automatic rifles that could be switched to fully automatic use, both of which are illegal.

Butler told the court during Wagner’s arraignment, officers found ammunition clips and tear gas cannisters as well as MDOC property, including a riot helmet, tear gas cannisters, pepper spray, a Taser, cartridges, and ammunition.

Butler said Wagner did not have permission to have the MDOC property.

Wagner, an arsenal sergeant at Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility, was arraigned Monday in Ionia County District Court on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and possessing a firearm while committing a felony.

Magistrate David Wirth entered a not guilty plea for the defendant and set a $100,000 bond. He also set a probable cause conference on March 4 and a preliminary examination on March 11.

Ionia County sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Michigan State Police bomb squad, served a warrant on Wagner’s home Friday.

Jenni Riehle, MDOC’s public information officer, told MIRS Monday that Wagner had been placed on an “unpaid stop order and is under internal investigation by the department.”
