(Source: MIRS.news, Published 07/15/2025) During a media tour Tuesday, Michigan State Police Director Col. Col. James F. Grady II sidestepped a question about whether he had considered resigning after a no-confidence vote from the troopers' association.
In June, 98.48 percent of the nearly 1,200 responding members of the Michigan State Police Troopers Association survey indicated they did not have confidence in MSP leadership. During a press conference conducted during a tour of the State Emergency Operations Center and Michigan Intelligence Operations Center, Grady sidestepped a question from MIRS if at any point he considered resigning or talked about resignation.

“I was appointed as the director of the state police back in 2023. I remain in this position and I will do my best every day in making sure that we keep the state of Michigan safe,” Grady said.
He also defended his leadership during a hearing in front of a joint session of the Michigan House Oversight and House State Police committees.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has stood by her appointee during the backlash against Grady. The Colonel has also received accolades from the Michigan Chronicle – who recognized Grady among its 2025 Men of Excellence honorees, the Legislative Black Caucus and the Metro Detroit chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
The Michigan State Police Trooper Association, who have represented troopers and sergeants since 1964, and the MSP Command Officers Association filed a complaint questioning Grady and Brimacombe’s integrity.
The Michigan Association of Police Organizations, the Michigan State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the National Troopers Coalition have since come out with statements in support of new MSP leadership.
