How Much Did The Flint Water Crisis Prosecution Cost?

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 03/12/2025) The new House "Weaponization of State Government" subcommittee is asking the Attorney General's office for financial documents related to the Flint Water Crisis prosecution, which included former Gov. Rick Snyder until the cases were thrown out due to a procedural misstep.

In all, Attorney General Dana Nessel's office sought a combined 41 criminal charges against nine former Flint city and state officials for their conduct that led to Flint's water supply being tainted with lead. Of the nine, Nessel's team secured successful prosecutions on none of them.

Chair Angela Rigas (R-Caledonia) announced her decision to send the request after the subcommittee's first meeting.

Rigas is looking for detailed information on financial expenditures incurred during prosecutions related to the Flint water crisis by March 25 at the latest, a press release said.

"Citizens have a right to see how their tax dollars were spent, and we're going to help them get the answers," Rigas said.

The press release doesn't mention requests from former Attorney General Bill Schuette's time in office. Rigas said down the road she may request documents from Schuette's tenure, but right now Nessel is the focus. During Schuette's time in office, 15 were charged and seven reached plea deals on misdemeanor charges, which were ultimately dismissed. In short, nobody spent hard time behind bars for the poisoning of Flint's water.
