(Source: MIRS.news, Published 03/17/2025) The numbers in the famous 313 area code have run out and starting Nov. 7 the new 679 area code will be implemented as an overlay requiring everyone to dial 10 digits when making local calls.
The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) said telephone customers would have a six-month period to start dialing the 10-digit numbers starting April 7. This would allow them time to get used to the change.
After Oct. 7, local calls made in the 313 area code will not work unless a 10-digit number is dialed.
The new telephone numbers with the 679 area code are expected to be assigned starting Nov. 7, but that would only happen once the 313 area code numbers are gone, which isn't expected to happen until winter 2027.
The 313 numbers would still exist and no one would need to change their phone number. Even after the 679 area code started to be used, the 313 could be recycled and reused. That could also change the date of when the 679 area code would start to be used.
The area code won't change the use of three-digit calls, such as emergency 911 and Miss Dig 811.
The MPSC advised any safety or security equipment or emergency systems that rely on local calling in the 313 area code to make sure they are reprogrammed to include the new 10-digit number.
The international prefix of 1 would still need to be dialed to make a long-distance call.
