(Source: MIRS.news, Published 11/19/2025) William Null, one of three defendants acquitted for allegedly trying to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, has filed paperwork to run for governor as a Republican next year.

Null, 43, of Delton in Barry County, filed a campaign finance statement of organization Tuesday. For now, he is applying for the reporting wavier, vowing not to raise or spend more than $1,000 on his campaign.

His treasurer is Eric Monitor, who was acquitted with Null and Null's brother in 2023 for allegedly supporting the plot to kidnap the governor. Monitor lost a bid to be the Wexford County Sheriff last year, losing in the Republican primary to the incumbent 3,308 to 661.

Null needs to collect at least 15,000 valid signatures by April 21 to get his name on the Republican primary ballot next August.

In response to Wednesday's filing, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel wrote, “William Null is a far-right extremist and former militia member whose dangerous, violent extremism has no place in our state. The Michigan Democratic Party strongly condemns Null’s candidacy for governor, and we urge Michigan Republican Party Chair Jim Runestad and each of the Republican candidates for governor to join us in condemning Null and his dangerous extremism.”
