Supremes Allow MMOP Proposal To Go To Voters

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 09/03/2026) In a three-sentence order, the Michigan Supreme Court today denied an appeal challenging certification of the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics ballot committee’s proposal.

The court rejected Protect MI Free Speech and James Holcomb’s request to force the Board of State Canvassers to undo its certification, saying it was “not persuaded that it should grant the requested relief.”

Protect MI spokesperson John Sellek said the court “denied an opportunity to expose” the Board of State Canvassers’ “faulty math and failure to follow state law, but it can’t deny that MMOP is using dark money millions to pass a proposal that will allow out-of-state billionaires to control our politics while silencing countless innocent Michigan citizens who didn’t realize they signed away their own rights.”

The initiative would prohibit regulated electric and gas utilities and contractors with more than $250,000 a year in government contracts, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, from making direct or indirect campaign contributions to candidates or officeholders who could affect them.

The Board of State Canvassers approved MMOP’s petition signatures July 24, finding the group had 645 valid signatures in a 1,000-signature sample. Protect MI, a ballot question committee, sued, alleging the BSC’s math didn’t add up because the initiative needed 661 valid signatures in the sample, not 636.
