Xiong Wants Oversight Hearing On Rogers Wife’s Gas Gift Card Giveaway
(Source: MIRS.news, Published 10/16/2026) Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) said she will push for a House oversight hearing next term into whether a Detroit gas-card giveaway by Republican U.S. Senate nominee Mike Rogers’ wife violated Michigan election law.
Kristi Rogers distributed $10 gas gift cards Oct. 14 at Freedom Fuel at Harper and Cadieux while promoting her husband’s call to suspend the state gas tax, according to reporting and footage posted by journalist Sam Robinson.

Michigan law prohibits giving something of value to induce or influence a person’s vote. Whether the giveaway violated that prohibition would depend on the circumstances, including the intent behind distributing the cards. The reporting presented does not establish that recipients were required to pledge a vote or support Rogers to receive one.
Xiong, a member of the House Election Integrity Committee, said the footage raised questions because the giveaway occurred alongside campaign activity. She alleged that recipients were given Rogers campaign stickers in exchange for the cards.
“My plan is definitely to follow through with this,” Xiong told MIRS. “I have made it very clear that this is something that we need to investigate to hold those accountable for their campaign activity.”
Xiong said she would continue seeking a hearing regardless of which party controls the House next term, whether it is Speaker Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) or from Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton).”
She also questioned the campaign’s choice of location, arguing that the event targeted lower-income Detroit residents and Black voters.
“I mean, it would be different if this person showed up as herself and not as a surrogate of the candidate with campaign materials and handing out gift cards,” Xiong said.
Her request would seek legislative scrutiny of the event.
MIRS sought comment from Rogers’ campaign but had not received a response by publication.
