(Source: MIRS.news, Published 07/15/2025) Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Tuesday took to social media to trumpet General Motors' announcement that it would be producing the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado LD and GMC Sierra LD at an Orion Township plant starting in 2027.

“GM and Michigan have a long, rich history. Today’s product announcement in Lake Orion will bring production of some of GM’s most popular and profitable vehicles, a sign of the long-term viability of this investment in Michigan. This is just the latest example of the progress we are making to create good-paying union auto jobs and grow the economy,” Whitmer said.

The GM plant in the Detroit-Hamtramck area would also be the only plant to produce several electric vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC HUMMER EV.

“We don’t care what you drive – gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric – as long as it’s made in Michigan,” she said.

She also took to social media to tout a ranking from CNBC on July 7 that put Michigan as the sixth-highest state in the country for businesses.

“Michigan’s economic progress is undeniable, and we are proud to be a top 10 state to do business in the country,” she said.

She also cited data released from the Yale Budget Lab that stated tariffs were at the highest point in 115 years, which she said would put a strain on some Michigan businesses at a direct cost of $82.3 billion.

“I’m not against tariffs outright, but they are a blunt tool that must be used strategically and with a clear end goal. The new federal tariffs have already spiked the effective tariff rate to the highest it has been since 1910,” Whitmer said.

She said the tariffs could force businesses to increase prices, lay people off, not fill otherwise needed positions, or just make less money.

“Michiganders can’t afford to bear the burden of these chaotic polices. I’ll continue to fight for smart fiscal management and common-sense trade policies that support our businesses, grow our economy, and lower costs for Michiganders,” Whitmer said.
