Swanson Critical Of ICE's Handling Of Minnesota Shooting

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 01/09/2026) Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Swanson said law enforcement “is better than" what he saw in video footage from Minnesota, where a federal immigration agent shot a protester to death.

Renee Good ignored a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent's order to exit her Honda Pilot, opting instead to drive away. Depending on the angle of the video of the incident, some argue Good appeared to attempt to run over the agent. Swanson, the Genesee County sheriff, and others argue the path of her vehicle wasn't going toward the ICE agent as she left the scene.

Regardless, the officer opened fire, muttering, “fucking bitch” after he'd done so. The Honda Pilot swerved down the road and crashed into another parked vehicle.

Good, 37, is dead, and Swanson was disgusted by what he saw.

Speaking in his own video, which had received more than 21,800 likes by 7 p.m. on Friday, Swanson called out the federal agents for wearing masks and driving vehicles to a scene that had no markings.

"Law enforcement is held to the highest standard when it comes to deadly force," Swanson said.

"It's called a force continuum. We are there to escalate as force escalates and de-escalate as force de-escalates . . .We can't shoot people who are running away. We can't shoot people who have a gun but aren't pointing it at anybody. We certainly can't shoot when we're not in danger."

Swanson didn't see the agent being in any danger. The fact that shots were fired, he said, was “stunning.” Equally as stunning: the officers not only didn't seek to render aid to Good, but didn't hold the scene together. People were allowed to wander in and out before investigators could start their investigation.

“This is what breaks down trust in law enforcement, across the board,” Swanson said. “Everybody pays a price for what you just saw . . . when you have authority over people, and it's used as a weapon, not a tool, it hurts all of us.”
