(Source: MIRS.news, Published 04/07/2026) State Rep. Carrie Rheingans (D-Ann Arbor) helped put together 218 state legislators from 27 states calling for Vice President JD Vance to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

Rheingans and Rhode Island state Sen. Tiara Mack organized the letter and 28 other Michigan Legislators signed on to it, including: Sens. Rosemary Bayer (D-Keego Harbor) and Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit); and Reps. Noah Arbit (D-West Bloomfield), Erin Byrnes (D-Dearborn), Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City), Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing), Morgan Foreman (D-Ann Arbor), Kara Hope (D-Holt), Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth), Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy), Jasper Martus (D-Flushing), Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park), Donavan McKinney (D-Detroit), Reggie Miller (D-Belleville), Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit), Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods), Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia), Natalie Price (D-Berkley), Phil Skaggs (D-Grand Rapids), Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills), Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing), Dylan Wegela (D-Garden City), Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park), Jimmie Wilson Jr. (D-Ypsilanti), Stephen Wooden (D-Grand Rapids), and Stephanie A. The White House

“We are at a critical moment where constitutional boundaries, democratic norms and the balance of powers are being tested in unprecedented ways. Every day that President Trump continues in office is another day that the safety of Americans – and people around the world – remains in jeopardy,” Rheingans said.

The second demand from the letter is that Congress enforces its constitutional war powers regarding the threats of attacks on civilian infrastructure by Trump.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said a “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if Iran misses Trump’s 8 p.m. deadline to make a deal to end the war, including opening the Strait of Hormuz.

Many, including Pope Leo the XIV, spoke out against Trump’s threat, calling it “unacceptable.”

“The president of the United States is now calling for an entire civilization to be killed and risking a potentially catastrophic world conflict. This is not a drill,” U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Grand Rapids) said in a statement. “Mr. President — the American people did not vote for this. Going to war requires the consent of the people, through their representatives, and the brave servicemen and women putting their lives on the line deserve more respect. I’m calling on my Republican colleagues to stand with Democrats and support a War Powers Resolution to end this reckless war of choice.”

Truth social post from Trump announcing a ceasefire with iran for 2 weeks

Just after 6:30 p.m., Trump announced he'd agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack for a period of two weeks” after "the Islamic Republic of Iran (agreed) to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”

The letter from the state lawmakers also cites the military operations in Iran and Venezuela without authorization by Congress.

The letter also alleges Trump violated the First, Fourth, Fifth and Eighth Amendments. As well as due process violations and the weaponization of federal agencies.

The last portion of the letter points to statements that the signers claim undermine electoral integrity, voting rights, and the prohibition of a third presidential term.

“With Congressional Republican leadership keeping their heads in the sand and their members away from DC, I felt compelled to speak up on behalf of the people in my state, as other legislators do in their state,” Rheingans said.
