Maleyko said his 30 years of experience at Dearborn Public Schools and relationships with local districts, the Department of Education and State Board of Education would all be needed to improve student learning across the board.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support children and families, educators and other school staff at all of Michigan’s public schools,” Maleyko said.
Between Oct. 4, Rice’s last day, and Dec. 8, Chief Deputy Superintendent Sue Carnell will serve as interim state superintendent, which was approved by the State Board of Education during its last meeting.
Maleyko has also served on the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators and was on the original committee that put together the education department’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh said board members were looking forward to working with Maleyko.
“In the meantime, we will be in good hands with Dr. Rice and then Dr. Carnell providing the leadership that has contributed to great progress toward our eight goals in the plan.”
