Nassar Among 20,000 Deleted From Sex Offender Registry
(Source: MIRS.news, Published 09/30/2026) Two disgraced doctors, including convicted child molester Larry Nassar, are among the more than 20,000 sex offenders removed from Michigan’s sex offender registry after a Michigan Supreme Court ruling.
While Nassar was essentially given a life sentence and remains imprisoned, former physician Kassem Hallak, who was convicted in 2013 of sexually assaulting several patients, has been released and is no longer required to register as a sex offender.

“To the victims and survivors of these offenses, our office is truly sorry that the person who harmed you will no longer be required to register,” the Eaton County Prosecutor’s office said in a Facebook post. “We understand that changes like this can be deeply concerning, particularly for those who rely on the registry as an important tool for safety and awareness.
“While we disagree with the Court and have concerns about the potential risk created by the decision, we are bound to respect and follow the ruling,” the post added.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled in People v. Eddie Lee Smith that the state’s current sex offender registry law could not be applied to registrants whose offense occurred before July 1, 2011.
According to the Eaton County prosecutor's post, the court could have allowed sex offenders to remain on the registry, but chose not to.
“Rather, the court chose to toss the scalpel aside and use a chainsaw,” the post reads.
It's a decision the prosecutor's office said was the court's effort to eliminate the Sex Offender Registry Act, and the court's decision precludes the Legislature from addressing any concern “as any new legislation would constitute” a retroactive penalty for pre-2011 offenders, like Nassar and Hallak.
Nassar, who was accused of molesting young athletes under the guise of medical treatment, had separate criminal cases filed in Eaton and Ingham counties, and he subsequently pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. However, Nassar’s offenses occurred prior to 2011.
Nassar was subsequently sentenced to 40-175 years in prison for the Ingham County case and 40-125 years for the Eaton County conviction.
Hallak was a 54-year-old Holt doctor who was convicted of eight of the 11 counts he was charged with. The charges ranged from groping to rape, and the offenses occurred at the Charlotte Medical Center and Urgent Care.
