(Source: MIRS.news, Published 07/14/2025) Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo), the term-limited chair of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee, announced this Monday morning he will run for the 4th Congressional District seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Zeeland), who is teasing a U.S. Senate run in 2026.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Spokesperson Katie Smith said Huizenga and the Michigan Republicans would see a backlash in the midterms for passing the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill," which they project will reduce Medicaid recipient numbers.

"Huizenga and his allies put special interests ahead of Michiganders and Michigan voters will send them packing next year to elect someone who actually fights for them," Smith said.
Brian Patrick, Huizenga’s spokesperson, said Huizenga won the district by 11.9 percent and 11.7 percent during the past two elections.
"They are trying to make 'Fetch' happen," Patrick said.
The DCCC isn't endorsing a Democrat until after the primary, but an April press release put Huizenga, Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte) and the Michigan 10th Congressional District on their radar for spending.
McCann, 53, is the third Democrat to file in the district, with 2024 nominee Jessica Swartz looking for a rematch and Diop Harris, of Battle Creek, also in the race.
McCann worked with the Red Cross and local nonprofits during his 10 years serving as a Kalamazoo City Commissioner. He then won a state House race in 2010 and served until 2014. In the 2014 state Senate election, he lost by 61 votes to then-Rep. Margaret O’Brien. He ran again in 2018, this time defeating O'Brien in a rematch by more than 12,000 votes.
"Families in Southwest Michigan know what hard work looks like. But right now, that work isn't paying off like it should, thanks to politicians in Washington who have left us behind to give tax breaks to special interests and billionaires," said McCann said. "Our families deserve a representative who works as hard as they do and who focuses on what matters to them, and that's why I'm running for Congress."
"I've spent my life working for our community and putting politics aside to deliver tax relief for Michigan families, protect women's right to choose, and bring good-paying jobs back home," McCann said in a release.
