(Source: MIRS.news, Published 04/20/2026) For years, he’s been a fixture outside Lansing City Hall and the Capitol, serving up hot dogs to lawmakers, lobbyists and reporters alike.
Now, Clinton Tarver, also known as “the hot dog guy,” is stepping into a different kind of arena: running for state representative.

If you’ve spent any time around the Capitol during the warmer months, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Tarver at his hot dog stand, a longtime staple just steps from the building. In the offseason, he shifts to catering work, but his presence in Lansing’s political orbit has been constant.
The jump from hot dog stand to the campaign trail may seem unexpected, but Tarver has a direct connection to Michigan politics — his wife, Linda Lee Tarver, previously served as ethnic vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party.
His entry into the race comes as Michigan's candidate filing deadline looms this Tuesday, triggering a last-minute rush of announcements across the state.
For MIRS, that has meant building another comprehensive set of candidate profiles heading into the 2026 cycle, as races from the Legislature to Congress continue to take shape. And as the candidate pool grows, the updated filing list shows notable gaps across the map.
At the congressional level, Michigan's 12th and 13th district stands out as Democratic-only contests so far, with no Republican candidates filed. In the 12th District, incumbent Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and Byron Nolen are the only candidates on file, while the 13th District currently lists just incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit) on the Democratic side.
In the state Senate, Detroit’s 3rd District is shaping up as a crowded Democratic primary with eight candidates, none of whom are Republican challengers. Though across the chamber, as of late, each of the 110 districts in the House has had both a Republican and a Democrat in the race.
