Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) has emerged as one of the most outspoken voices in Michigan’s Legislature criticizing the United States’ involvement in the escalating conflict with Iran, raising concerns in recent days through a press conference, social media posts and television appearance.
The Dearborn Democrat, whose district represents the largest Middle Eastern and Arab-American communities in the country, has repeatedly called for Congress to rein in the administration’s military actions and pursue diplomacy instead of further escalation.

“I think this president has allowed the Israeli government to drag us into a war that Congress has never authorized, and the American people don’t want,” Farhat told MIRS. He added that it's unacceptable the U.S. is spending “a billion dollars a day fighting this conflict when Americans here at home are suffering from skyrocketing healthcare costs, grocery prices, and now we're seeing a housing crisis.”
Farhat said he believed diplomacy had been making progress before the conflict escalated, pointing to negotiations that had been underway in Oman. When the U.S. attacks in the middle of negotiations, he said, it diminishes their status in the world as a leader people can count on.
The conflict has struck a particularly emotional chord among residents in his district, Farhat said, where many families closely follow events in the Middle East.
“They’re watching on TV the bombing of South Lebanon and Beirut,” he said. “They’re mourning the death of six service members who signed up to protect America and were killed in a conflict.”
While foreign policy decisions ultimately fall to the federal government, Farhat said Americans should be paying close attention to how elected officials respond as the situation develops.
“They should be watching how the Michigan delegation is handling this,” he said. “Are they complacent? Are they quiet? Are they rubber-stamping a war that nobody wants? Or are they doing their jobs and representing the people of Michigan?”
Farhat also framed the issue as one that crosses party lines, pointing out that a significant portion of voters in his community supported President Donald Trump in the last election. He said they voted for him because he promised to end the endless wars and they're watching to see if his supporters are going to hold him to that promise.
“People are sick and tired of the hypocrisy of people saying one thing to get votes and (doing) another when they’re in office.”
