(Source: MIRS.news, Published 10/01/2025) Legislative Sergeants at Arms would have statewide jurisdiction as law enforcement officers, not just the Capitol or office buildings, under Rep. Sarah Lightner (R-Springport)’s HB 5055, which passed the House today, 61-48.
Sergeants would be able to enforce the chamber’s rules and laws of the state anywhere in Michigan.
Lightner said this bill doesn’t have to do with giving teeth to a Call of the House or Senate. Instead, the idea is to allow sergeants to go to remote committee hearings, investigate threats to legislators, and work more with local law enforcement.

The bill did not receive committee testimony before being voted on today. Democratic yea votes include Reps. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph), Denise Mentzer (D-Mount Clemens) and Will Snyder (D-Muskegon). Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) was absent.
The House also voted on HB 4962, a Rep. Ron Robinson (R-Utica) bill that would create the Michigan National Guard Member Benefit Fund. With its tie-barred bills that were not voted on today, it would allow active service Michigan National Guard members to access money for child care.
The bill passed, 93-16.
