Dick DeVos Making Calls For John James

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 05/05/2026) West Michigan Republican powerhouse Dick DeVos is beginning to make fundraising calls in support of gubernatorial candidate John James, MIRS has learned, a development that will help the Congressman push back with paid media down the line against primary opponent Perry Johnson and his bottomless pockets.

DeVos, a multi-millionaire and 2006 Republican gubernatorial nominee, had not been involved in the governor's race even though his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Pamella DeVos started nearly a year ago “Mission Michigan," a super PAC to support James's gubernatorial ambitions.

It's not known at this point whether Dick DeVos is raising money for Mission Michigan or another fundraising vehicle that will spend independently in support of James's candidacy.

The fundraising comes as Johnson spent roughly $18 million this spring to boost his name ID against James, who has shown up to more public speaking opportunities as of late. Still, James has not directly debated Johnson or any other candidate. That is expected to change on May 16. Mission Michigan has spent $2.9 million in response to Johnson's big spend. The James campaign has spent $1.1 million up to this point on TV.

The ad spending is having an impact on polling. Some surveys suggest James and Johnson are tied, while others still have James up by double-digits. Former Attorney General Mike Cox, Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton) and pastor Ralph Rebandt are also still in the race.

DeVos waited until May 2022 to endorse eventual GOP nominee Tudor Dixon.
