(Source: MIRS.news, Published 05/02/2025) Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has been involved in 69 election-related lawsuits more than six years into her tenure, more than the past four Secretaries of State combined, according to data compiled by the Legislative Service Bureau for Rep. Steve Carra (R-Three Rivers).

Benson has won 57 of these cases, lost five and saw mixed results in the other seven.

Carra requested the data to verify the suspicion that Benson has been on the losing end of more lawsuits than her five predecessors. That ended up being accurate if Benson's losses are added to outcomes that had mixed results.

Benson is at 12 in that case while former Secretaries of State Richard Austin and James Hare had 10 a piece.

However, Benson has also had far more wins than her five predecessors combined. She's at 57. They're at 49.

It's not surprising which number Carra focused on. He called her a "serial election lawsuit loser" in a press release he issued on Friday.

"From violating poll challenger rights to illegally relaxing the signature verification process, Secretary Benson has established herself as a serial election lawsuit loser," Carra said. "It's clear from her record that Secretary Benson is purposeful in her efforts to use the office of secretary of state to push the envelope as far as she can to tip the scale in favor of Democrats, making our elections ripe for fraud and abuse."

Benson's team saw the numbers much differently.

"We appreciate Rep. Carra taking the time to remind Michiganders of Secretary Benson's extraordinary record of legal victories protecting Michigan's secure and accessible elections," said Benson spokesperson Angela Benander.
