A House Oversight subcommittee chair walked back an earlier claim that an apparently defunct Clinton Township day care bilked the state of $1.12 million today, but blamed a state agency for not being clear on how it discloses grant recipients.

A Republican lawmaker unveiled legislation on Wednesday to create a statewide public school district that would allow parents to hire certified teachers directly, arguing the proposal would reward top educators, encourage innovation and move Michigan beyond the traditional classroom model.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed bipartisan bills Thursday to remove the mandatory essay portion of the Michigan Merit Exam given to mostly 11th graders and end the requirement to place test scores on school transcripts.

“How many of you guys think this plan has merit?” said 2026 gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan.

The State Board of Education is not recommending mandatory vaccinations at public schools, but members seemed at a loss for answers on Tuesday as the state's chief medical executive officer told them how vaccination levels are dropping.
