House Republicans voted 57-41 today to create a select committee investigating how the state reviewed petitions for the Americans for Citizen Voting ballot proposal.

A proposed constitutional amendment requiring Michigan voters to prove their U.S. citizenship before voting appears headed for rejection after Bureau of Elections staff Monday concluded the petition drive fell an estimated 11,775 valid signatures short of qualifying for the November ballot.

Opponents of the campaign finance ballot initiative backed by Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) claim its petitions include forged signatures, duplicate signatures and even the names of people who were already dead when they supposedly signed.
