(Source: MIRS.news, Published 11/3/2022) The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) filed a campaign finance complaint today against Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon Thursday for spending $5,000 from her campaign account on dresses she wore at a debate and other functions.

The general rule is that if business clothes are suitable for general wear, the purchase of them is not allowable to be covered by campaign accounts, according to court precedent and the state's election law.

MDP Chair Lavora Barnes’ complaint also quotes former Elections Director Chris Thomas, who when asked about similar purchases made by a former Taylor mayor said, "There are several categories that are permissible . . . and nowhere is personal clothing included."

The Democratic Governors Association was quick with a response. Spokesperson Sam Newton said, "If Tudor Dixon didn't break the law, she should come clean by immediately releasing the receipts from her $5,000 luxury shopping spree on her campaign's dime."

Dixon spokesperson Sara Broadwater said, "Gretchen Whitmer has been forced to disgorge over $3 million in illegal campaign contributions so it is no surprise that her radical cronies are now dishonestly attacking Tudor for her campaign expenses."

Broadwater said Dixon campaign has fully complied with the law.

"The only people who could believe the conclusory allegations here probably also believe Whitmer's lie that she only closed schools for three months in Michigan. Just imagine if the Democrats put this much effort into teaching our kids how to read."
