(Source: MIRS.news, Published 02/18/2025) Travel to Toronto by train may soon be possible from the Michigan Central Station in Detroit.
A potential expansion of the Chicago-Detroit Wolverine railway to Toronto is in the first phase of a three-step consultation process, according to the MDOT Office of Rail.
The proposed expansion is a part of three Michigan intercity passenger rail routes that were accepted to the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Corridor Identification and Development program, a pipeline for intercity railway projects to be ready for implementation. The FRA is reimbursing up to $500,000 per corridor for this first step.
Michael Frezell of the MDOT Office of Rail said the department is anticipating Step One will take approximately nine months to complete.
“We are in the very early stages, meeting with consultants, so no scope, plans and budget have been developed,” Frezell said.
Ford Motor Co. CEO Bill Ford said he is considering the newly renovated Michigan Central Station for the location of the stop in a WJR interview at the Detroit Auto Show early in January. The Amtrak stop would operate on the Station's campus, not out of the building itself.
"It's not impossible, let's put it that way," Ford said in the interview.
