(Source: MIRS.news, Published 08/21/2024) So . . . Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday with her Lieutenant Governor, Garlin Gilchrist II, as is evident in the below picture the LG took from the convention floor.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson also posted pictures from the convention in Chicago Tuesday with Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak). And Attorney General Dana Nessel was hosting a roundtable today with other attorneys general as she prepares for a convention speech she's planning to give later this week.
With Senate President Pro Tempore Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) and House Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) also in Chicago, as is evident in the below picture, is there anyone back home running things?
According to Article 26 of the Michigan Constitution, if the Governor is out of state, the Lieutenant Governor assumes the duties of Governor. If the LG it out, it falls to the Secretary of State. If the SOS is out, it falls to the Attorney General.
From there, if the Attorney General is out, it falls to the President Pro Tempore. If that person is out, it falls to the Speaker of the House.
After that point, the Governor has a line of succession that's appointed early in a term. Whitmer assigned, in order:
State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks, former Lt. Gov. John Cherry, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Huntington National Bank Chair Gary Torgow and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing), who is also in Chicago.
Rep. Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) confirmed this on X today, when she responded to former Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer over X when she said she chatted with Gilchrist in Negaunee last week and he confirmed Eubanks would be the acting governor.
