Where Is The Electricity Coming From To Power EVs?

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 01/23/2025) The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) on Thursday put a process in place that requires the state's electrical utilities to address how they plan on dealing with the impact of a growing number of electric vehicles on the state's electric grid.

As part of the transportation electrification plan (TEP) filing process, requirements will be posted by Feb. 6. The utilities would have to file every two years about how the electrical grid would be changed by charging electrical vehicles by 2030 and the long-term strategies to keep the electrical load stable.

“A TEP must also reflect a scenario based on the state of Michigan’s goal to build infrastructure necessary to support 2 million EVs on Michigan roads and deploy 100,000 chargers by 2030,” said Commissioner Alessandra Carreon.

Carreon said the information provided by the utilities is critical.

She said it wouldn’t be a measure of just passenger vehicles either; public and school buses and commercial fleets need to be considered in the plans.

Commissioner Katherine Peretick said the state was in front of the grid plan to take on more EVs for eight years and this was the next step to that process.

She said after the TEPs are filed there will be an opportunity for public comment.

“It was a long process to get to this point, and I’m really happy with the resulting filing requirements that will be filed in a few weeks,” Peretick said.
