(Source: MIRS.news, Published 10/17/2024) Both the Republican and Democratic tickets have already visited Michigan more times in 2024 than they did in both 2020 and 2016, based on calculations from MIRS.news. The numbers come as both Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris have planned stops in Michigan on Friday, 19 days before the Nov. 5 General Election.

The Trump-Vance ticket has made 19 visits to Michigan in 2024 as of Thursday, compared to the Harris-Walz ticket’s 11 since the Vice President took over the Democratic campaign for president.

There’s nuance to these numbers. Harris has visited Michigan an additional four times this year in her official duties as vice president, and President Joe Biden made three campaign stops when he was the presumptive nominee.

For Democrats, that means there have been 14 campaign stops and 19 total appearances between Biden, Harris and Minn. Gov. Tim Walz in 2024.

Ticket-topping Republican spouses haven’t campaigned in Michigan like the Democrats’ spouses have. First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff campaigned in Marquette, Midland and Detroit across 14 days in May, Emhoff participated in three events across Flint, Oakland County and Macomb County on June 24, Gwen Walz spoke to the Michigan Education Association on Sept. 4, and Jill Biden campaigned for Harris in Clawson on Oct. 14.

That makes eight visits just from spouses. That brings the Harris-Walz ticket to 22 campaign stops.

Biden made one visit in his duties as president, stopping at a union hall in Ann Arbor on Sept. 6.

Trump’s third consecutive presidential campaign topped his previous two in total campaign visits. In 2020, the Trump-Pence ticket visited nine times and in 2016 got up to 14.

It’s a recent-history record for the Democrats too, compared to their seven visits in 2020 and nine in 2016. It’s important to note the COVID-19 pandemic inevitably stunted campaigning in 2020.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm leads Biden’s cabinet in visiting Michigan with four separate occasions, U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie SU comes next with three visits and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been in the Mitten twice since January.

Between campaigning and their official duties, the cabinet has made 18 visits to Michigan this year, based on MIRS' count.
