(Source: MIRS.news, Published 07/06/2022) Now on the outside looking in, but still believing he would have won the GOP primary for governor, a reflective Perry Johnson is looking at the remaining field which has been criticized in some corners for being too far right of the political center to win a general election.
Johnson was asked if he agrees that those elections are won in the center.
"I do," he readily responded.
He, however, was not nearly as ready to suggest that the current field of five contenders is so far out there that they are unable to pivot after the primary and present themselves as more centrist for the general voting population.
Rather than wade into that, he suggested, "I think you need to have a talk with each one of them" and with that he laughs, adding: "in order to win you have to compromise" and he says, "I want to win” while pledging to support whoever wins the Aug. 2 primary.
He warms to the discussion of compromising noting that among the 70 companies that he owns worldwide he has never lost a senior level manager "unless they died...They served 16 to 18 years and you learn to work together. Compromise is the key to success in life," he concludes.
As for the GOP chances of sending Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to an early political shower, Johnson concedes, "going up against Whitmer is going to be tough anyway. She is going to be tough to beat. She's an incumbent."
Asked if he was impressed with what's left of the field, he paused for three seconds and then said this: "I would say that we have a very tough road trying to beat the Governor. Period."
As for a possible endorsement he reports, "I haven't analyzed it to see who I would endorse."
He has discussed it with his inner circle including John Yob and reveals, "when you're running against someone, you're really not thinking about who you're going to endorse because you plan on endorsing yourself" and he laughs again.
Pressed for a blessing, he would not budge.
"I don't know. I really don't know."
