Inflation, Jobs, Economy Top List Of Most Important Issues

(Source: MIRS.news, Published 12/21/2023) The country’s inflation rate in 2023 dropped back to 3.1% after 7% and 6.5% climbs in 2021 and 2022, respectively, but the issue is still top-of-mind for Michigan voters among 19 different categories, according to recent polling by a left-leaning think tank. 

 

Data for Progress’s Dec. 8-13 survey of 718 likely Michigan voters found that inflation was “the most important issue in the U.S. today” by a 14% plurality of voters. 

 

“Jobs and the economy” and “national security and foreign policy, including the Israel-Palestine conflict” both checked in at No. 2 with 12% apiece. 

 

Immigration was the fourth-most cited issue at 9%. “Government spending and the budget deficit” was No. 5 with 8%. 

 

Gun safety, climate change/the environment and abortion were all tied at No. 6 with 6% apiece. 

 

Social Security and Medicare were No. 9 with 5%. Health care was No. 10 with 4%. 

 

Among Republicans, inflation (20%), immigration (20%), jobs and the economy (17%) and government spending/the budget deficit (15%) were the top issues. 

 

Among Democrats, the climate change and the environment category was No. 1 (12%), followed by inflation (11%), national security (10%), abortion (9%) and jobs and the economy (8%). 

 

Among independents or third-party voters, national security was No. 1 (15%). jobs and the economy was No. 2 (14%), inflation No. 3 (13%), government spending/budget deficit No. 4 (10%) and No. 5 climate change (6%). 

 

Overall, both the coronavirus pandemic and the “role of Big Tech” received 0% of the votes. Student loan debt, education, critical race theory and LGBTQ+ issues all received 1% apiece. 

 

Voting rights was the top issue for 2% of respondents.
