(Source: MIRS.news, Published 11/19/2024) The Calhoun County Board of Canvassers officially certified on Monday the election results showing Republican Steve Frisbie won House District 44 by 58 votes over Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek).

The win means, barring a successful recount, Republicans will have gained four seats in the 2024 election, giving them a 58-52 majority going into the 2025-26 session year.

“The canvass has now shown the original result was accurate. The voters' voices were heard, and the process is complete,” Frisbie said. “I'm grateful the canvassers handled this correctly and put the issue to rest.”

The news comes after Calhoun County mistakenly found that 2,800 previously uncounted votes from Battle Creek needed to be tabulated. It trimmed Frisbie's election night win from 1,381 votes to 58.

Calhoun County retabulated the Battle Creek precinct that had a problem with the votes being overwritten, but the results came back the same.

“Steve Frisbie worked hard every day to earn the voters’ trust, and the people of this community rewarded that commitment with this victory,” said Rep. Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland), chair of the House Republican Campaign Committee (HRCC). “Speaker-elect Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) and HRCC were front and center working to guarantee the integrity of the election and canvass process to protect the voters and ensure everyone’s vote was counted equally. I am thankful to the legal experts and volunteers who helped us make sure everything was done accurately and securely throughout the process. Now we can finally put aside the campaigning and get to work on the issues facing the people of this state. We are all looking forward to serving alongside Steve when the new legislative term starts in January.”
