(Source: MIRS.news, Published 09/27/2022) Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican candidate Kristina Karamo have half of their campaign donations coming from outside of Michigan.

Benson is sitting on $3.3 million, while Karamo, who filed the post-convention campaign finance statement yesterday, has $184,735 on hand. Benson outraised Karamo for the period between Aug. 12 and Sept. 16, despite a fundraiser for the Republican held by former President Donald TRUMP at his New Jersey golf course.

Many of Karamo’s high-dollar donations came in on Aug. 12 and 13, and include just over $30,000 from Florida, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York. There is $8,600 that came on Aug. 15 and 16, which included donations from similar locations.

The Karamo campaign spent $20,237 for event catering at Trump’s golf course on Aug. 17. If the event was only held on Aug. 15 and 16, as reported, then the campaign spent more on the fundraiser than it gained.

The Detroit News previously reported the candidate spent 10 days outside of the state fundraising, and many of the rest of the funds from out of state coincide with that reported window in September. (See, “Karamo Stiff Arms Detroit News, Free Press” 9/15/22)

Karamo’s campaign didn’t claim any fundraisers in the state.

Benson doubled what Karamo took in over the same period. She brought in $482,967 to Karamo’s $211,443. Benson has 18 times more cash on hand coming out of the post convention reports.

Expenditures from both camps are in the $300,000 range, with Benson at $383,738 and Karamo at $303,959 for the period.

Matthew DePerno, the Republican candidate for Attorney General, was also outraised by the Democratic incumbent Nessel.

DePerno raised $185,893 between Aug. 12 and Sept. 16 and Nessel raised $435,198 between Aug. 6 and Sept. 10.

The Nessel campaign spent $538,000 and has a final total of over $2.4 million on hand.

DePerno’s camp has spent $73,779, mostly on consulting and travel, and has a total of $237,820 on hand.

The next campaign finance deadline will be the quarterly report deadline on Oct. 25, with the pre-election deadline on Oct. 28.
