(Source: MIRS.news, Published 02/24/2025) Rep. Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) announced Monday that he is sponsoring a resolution urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the landmark decision that cleared the way for legalized same-sex marriages, a move that comes after the Idaho state Legislature passed a similar measure this month.
Schriver, among the chamber's most conservative members, is targeting Obergefell v. Hodges, saying the decision is at odds with "the sanctity of marriage, the Michigan Constitution and the principles upon which the country was established."
"Increased instances of religious persecution have been a consequence of the Court's ruling 10 years ago," Schriver wrote in his media advisory. "Some of these blatantly unjust instances have involved Michigan, including a Grand Rapids wedding venue, which faced fines and harassment in 2022 for choosing to exercise their religious belief and the state's Attorney General announcing in 2019 that Michigan wouldn't fine adoption agencies who wanted to do the same."
Schriver posted a draft copy of the media advisory on X around 12:30 p.m. Democratic reaction to the media advisory showed up in the MIRS inbox before the advisory itself.
"Unfortunately, this isn't a surprise coming from Josh Schriver and the right-wing extremists that populate Matt Hall's Republican caucus – and it's deeply dangerous," said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel. "Schriver is attacking hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who are nurses, teachers, soldiers and beloved members of the community."
House Democrats scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference Tuesday that will come before the Schriver event. Rep. Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park) and Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor), two openly gay legislators who are married to their husbands, are leading the press conference.
