(Source: MIRS.news, Published 01/11/2023) No state had more recall attempts against elected officials than Michigan in 2023, according to a report released Thursday by Ballotpedia. Michigan had 143 recall attempts. The closest two states were California with 58 and Colorado with 30.
The self-proclaimed “Encyclopedia of American Politics” also found Michigan had more recall attempts per 100,000 residents than any other state with 1.43, a distinction that Michigan also claimed in 2018 and 2022. The closest two states were Nebraska with 1.07 recall attempts per 100,000 residents, and North Dakota with 1.03.
Michigan led the way with 34 total officials recalled from office, meaning 22 percent of all public officials targeted for recall in Michigan were actually bounced from office.
Nationwide, city council members were targeted the most with recalls (177), followed by school board members (97), mayors (60), city officials (26), county officials (21), special district members (20) and state legislators (13).
