(Source: MIRS.news, Published 11/21/2024) The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is looking into how at least 32 Detroit Police Department officers appear to have been working without active law enforcement officer licenses.
MCOLES investigators said the officers were hired between November 2019 and August 2024. The department appears to have not requested to have those officers' licenses reactivated when they were hired or rehired.
State law prohibits officers from exercising authority if they do not have an active license. It was unclear what that would mean for arrests made by those officers during the period their licenses were inactive.
MCOLES told Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy about the situation.
The commission said they would review the status of the affected officers to see if they would be eligible for reactivation of their licenses. MCOLES is also in contact with the Detroit department to run an audit on all officers to make sure they are licensed.
The investigation announcement comes a day after MCOLES talked about the creation of an interim report that would allow officers moving departments to have a report generated that would allow them to get their licenses renewed by the new department.
