(MIRS.news, Published 10/03/2024) More than half of Michigan residents believe candidates aged 75 or older are too old to run for president, according to a recent survey conducted by Mitchell Research for MIRS.
The age of presidential candidates has become a significant issue in the 2024 election. Initially, incumbent President Joe Biden, at 81, sought re-election. However, Biden later decided to step aside, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee. As a result,
Republican nominee Donald Trump, at 78, is now the oldest presidential nominee in U.S. history.
If elected, Trump would leave office at 82, turning 83 shortly after his term ended. Former President Ronald Reagan was 77 when he left office.
The survey asked Michigan voters: "Regardless of the candidates running now, how old do you feel is 'too old' for a candidate to run for president?"
Here are the results:
-10% said 65 is too old
-22% said 70 is too old
-20% said 75 is too old
-10% said 80 is too old
-6% said 85 is too old
-19% said there should be no age limit
